Pressure and temperature gauge FAQ

Straight answers to the questions buyers, consultants and plant engineers ask Pioneer about pressure gauges, differential pressure and Magnehelic gauges, and temperature gauges.

Choosing a gauge

Who makes pressure gauges in Pune?

Pioneer Industrial Instruments, Plot No. 5, Gat No. 107/B, Sonai Industrial Estate, Paud Road, Pirangut, Pune 412115, has made pressure and temperature gauges since 1994. Call or WhatsApp +91 93700 39974.

Which pressure gauges does Pioneer make?

All-stainless Bourdon tube gauges, glycerine filled and weatherproof gauges, commercial gauges, ±0.25% test gauges, diaphragm seal gauges, differential and low differential pressure gauges, and digital gauges, from 40 to 250 mm dials and 0–1 to 0–600 kg/cm².

To which standard are Pioneer gauges made?

Pressure gauges are ±1% FSD as per IS 3624 (test gauges ±0.25% FSD). Bimetallic temperature gauges are ±1% FSD as per EN 13190. If your project specifies EN 837-1, state the accuracy class and we confirm it at quotation.

How fast can I get a quotation?

Within one working day of receiving your BOQ or instrument schedule. Send it to info@pioneerinstrumentation.com or WhatsApp +91 93700 39974.

Does Pioneer export gauges?

Yes, FOB Nhava Sheva (JNPT), to the Middle East and GCC, Africa, Europe, South-East Asia, Japan, the Americas and Russia, with export documentation and third-party inspection on request.

Stainless Steel Pressure Gauge

What is the accuracy of a Pioneer stainless steel pressure gauge?

±1% of full-scale deflection as per IS 3624. For checking other gauges, use the ±0.25% FSD test gauge.

Which dial size should I order?

100 mm is the default for pipelines and plant rooms; 150 mm reads well from a few metres away; 63 mm suits panels, skids and OEM equipment; 200 and 250 mm are for gauges read from a distance.

Can the same gauge be used on steam?

Yes, with a siphon (U-type or pigtail) between the line and the gauge so that condensate, not live steam, reaches the Bourdon tube. See siphons and valves.

Is SS 316 needed or will SS 304 do?

Pioneer's standard all-SS gauge already has an SS 316 tube and socket, the wetted parts. The SS 304 case and movement do not touch the process.

What is the price of a stainless steel pressure gauge?

It depends on dial size, range, filling and connection. Send the BOQ line or the duty and Pioneer quotes within one working day; call or WhatsApp +91 93700 39974.

Do you supply dual-scale (kg/cm² and psi) gauges?

Yes. Dials can be printed in kg/cm², bar, psi or kPa, single or dual scale, for India and export projects.

Glycerine Filled and Weatherproof Pressure Gauge

Why fill a pressure gauge with glycerine?

To damp pointer flutter on pulsating or vibrating lines and to lubricate the movement. The reading becomes readable and the gauge lasts longer.

Glycerine or silicone: which fill should I choose?

Glycerine for normal ambient conditions. Silicone for cold climates or large temperature swings. Neither is used on oxygen service; tell us the medium and we confirm the build.

What does IP 65 or IP 67 mean on a gauge?

IP 65 is dust-tight and protected against water jets, enough for plant rooms and covered outdoor lines. IP 67 also survives temporary immersion, for exposed and wash-down locations.

Does liquid filling change the accuracy?

No. Accuracy stays ±1% FSD as per IS 3624; the fill only steadies the pointer.

Can an existing dry gauge be filled with glycerine later?

Only if the case is sealed and made for filling. Order a liquid filled gauge from the start; Pioneer's all-stainless case is built for it.

Commercial Pressure Gauge

Where should I not use a commercial gauge?

Outdoors, in wet or wash-down areas, on corrosive media, on steam without a siphon, or on heavy pulsation. Use the stainless or glycerine filled gauge there.

Do you supply commercial gauges in bulk for OEMs?

Yes. Send the dial size, range, connection and annual quantity; dual scale and custom dial printing can be discussed at quotation.

Is the commercial gauge accurate enough for a test bench?

For calibration and test work use the ±0.25% FSD test gauge.

What is the difference between a commercial and a stainless steel pressure gauge?

The commercial gauge has a brass measuring system in a painted MS case (IP 54) for clean, dry, indoor use. The stainless gauge has SS 316 wetted parts and an SS 304 case (IP 65 / IP 67) for process, outdoor and corrosive service.

What dial sizes are available in commercial gauges?

40, 50, 63 and 100 mm.

Test Gauge (±0.25% FSD)

What accuracy should a test gauge have?

At least four times better than the gauge or system being tested. Pioneer's test gauge is ±0.25% FSD, so it can check ±1% FSD working gauges.

Can you supply an NABL calibration certificate?

Yes, on request, from an NABL-accredited laboratory. Mention it in your enquiry so it is included in the quotation and delivery time.

Which range for a hydro test at 15 kg/cm²?

0–25 kg/cm² puts 15 kg/cm² at 60% of full scale. Try the range selector for other pressures.

What is the difference between a test gauge and a normal pressure gauge?

A test gauge is about four times more accurate (±0.25% FSD against ±1% FSD), has a larger, finely divided dial and a knife-edge pointer, and is used as a reference rather than for permanent plant indication.

Digital Pressure Gauge

Digital or dial pressure gauge?

Dial gauges need no power and suit permanent installation. Digital gauges are easier to read exactly, switch units and hold peaks, which suits commissioning, testing and logging.

How long do the batteries last?

The compact 63 mm model runs about two years on 2 × AAA cells in auto shut-off mode.

Can a digital gauge read vacuum?

Yes. Ranges start at −100 kPa, and compound ranges are available.

Can a digital pressure gauge show bar, psi and kg/cm²?

Yes. Units are selectable, including psi, bar, mbar, kPa, MPa, kgf/cm² and mmHg.

Is a digital pressure gauge more accurate than a dial gauge?

Pioneer's digital gauge is 0.5% FS against ±1% FSD for a standard dial gauge, and it removes parallax error. For calibration work the ±0.25% FSD test gauge is the reference.

Differential Pressure Gauge

Why not use two pressure gauges and subtract?

Each gauge has its own error, which can be larger than the differential you want to see. A DP gauge measures the difference directly.

What is a remote-seal DP gauge for?

For media that would block or attack the gauge, or are too hot: diaphragm seals on capillaries keep the process away from the instrument.

Which DP gauge for an AHU filter?

Air filters need pascal ranges. Use the low differential pressure gauge, 0–250 or 0–500 Pa for most filters.

What is a differential pressure gauge used for?

To show the pressure difference across a filter, strainer, coil, heat exchanger or flow element on one dial, so a choking filter or a change in flow is seen directly.

What is the range of the remote-seal DP gauge?

0–100 mbar, with a 150 mm SS 304 dial, SS 316 diaphragm, 1" ANSI 150 RF flanged seals on 3 m capillaries and 150% over-range protection.

Magnehelic Gauge

Is this the same as a Magnehelic gauge?

It is the same type of instrument. Magnehelic is a trademark of Dwyer Instruments; Pioneer supplies its own low differential pressure gauges of this type.

Which range for an AHU filter?

0–250 Pa for pre-filters and 0–500 Pa for fine filters cover most AHUs. HEPA banks often need 0–1 kPa.

Can it be used on water?

No. It is for air and non-combustible, dry, clean gases only. For liquids use a differential pressure gauge.

What is a Magnehelic gauge used for?

Reading very small air pressure differences in pascals: clean-room pressure cascades, AHU and HEPA filter pressure drop, duct static pressure, fume hoods and dust collectors.

Do you supply a digital Magnehelic gauge?

Yes, Pioneer also supplies a digital differential pressure indicator reading in pascals; see the differential pressure gauge page.

Diaphragm Seal Pressure Gauge

When do I need a diaphragm seal?

When the medium could block, freeze, crystallise in or corrode a Bourdon tube, or when the process is too hot for the gauge.

Does a diaphragm seal reduce accuracy?

It adds a small error, mainly from temperature changes of the fill fluid. Keep capillaries short and both seals at the same temperature on DP duty.

What details do you need to quote?

Medium, operating and maximum temperature, pressure range, process connection (thread or flange) and quantity.

Can the diaphragm seal be flanged?

Yes. Seals can be threaded or flanged; the photo shows a Pioneer gauge on a flanged diaphragm seal. The flange standard and size are confirmed at quotation.

Which media need a diaphragm seal gauge?

Slurries, sludge, viscous liquids, crystallising chemicals, acids and alkalis, polymers, hygienic and very hot media.

Bimetallic Temperature Gauge

Which range for chilled water?

0 to 50 °C puts 6 to 12 °C chilled water in the lower middle of the dial and still reads ambient. For hot water at 80 °C, choose 0 to 150 °C. Try the range selector.

What stem length do I need?

The sensing part of the coil should sit in the middle of the flow: on small pipes an immersion of half the pipe diameter plus the tapping height is typical. Tell us the pipe size and we match the stem and thermowell.

Bimetallic or digital temperature gauge?

Bimetallic for permanent local indication without power. Digital Pt100 (0.25% FSD) where a closer reading matters, such as energy audits.

What is a bimetallic temperature gauge?

A dial thermometer whose stem contains a coil of two bonded metals. The coil turns as temperature changes and moves the pointer directly, so the gauge needs no power.

What dial sizes are available?

100, 150, 200 and 250 mm, in bottom entry, back entry and every-angle mounting.

Digital Temperature Gauge (Pt100)

How accurate is the digital temperature gauge?

0.25% of full scale, roughly four times tighter than a ±1% FSD bimetallic gauge.

Does the digital temperature gauge need wiring?

No. It runs on four 1.5 V alkaline cells.

Is a thermowell included with the digital temperature gauge?

The data sheet lists an SS 304 thermowell, 100 mm long, 1/2" BSP (F × M). Confirm length for your pipe size at enquiry.

Thermowells

Barstock or fabricated thermowell?

Barstock for high pressure, high velocity, steam and process service. Fabricated for HVAC and utility water lines where pressure and velocity are moderate.

Does a thermowell slow the temperature reading?

Slightly. A close fit between bore and stem keeps the lag small; on HVAC lines it is rarely noticeable.

Can you supply thermowells for gauges we already have?

Yes. Send the stem diameter, length, connection thread and the pipe size.
