Glycerine filled and weatherproof pressure gauge

A glycerine filled pressure gauge has its case filled with glycerine (or silicone oil) so the pointer stays steady on pulsating or vibrating lines. Pioneer makes it on the all-stainless build: SS 316 Bourdon tube, SS 304 case sealed to IP 65 / IP 67 with a blow-off disc, dials from 40 to 250 mm and ±1% FSD accuracy as per IS 3624.

Pioneer weatherproof stainless steel pressure gauge for liquid filling

How it works and when to use it

Put a dry gauge next to a reciprocating pump and the pointer becomes a blur, the movement wears out and nobody can read the line. The fill damps the pointer and lubricates the movement, so the reading holds still and the gauge lives longer. The same sealed case keeps out rain, wash-down water and dust, which is why outdoor and plant-room gauges are usually ordered this way.

Glycerine is the normal fill. Choose silicone oil where the gauge will see low ambient temperatures, because glycerine thickens in the cold, or on oxygen and oxidising service where glycerine must not be used at all (state the medium in your enquiry and we will confirm the build).

Versions

  • Glycerine filled. Standard choice for pumps, compressors, hydraulic power packs and pipework near rotating machines.
  • Silicone filled. For cold locations and wide ambient temperature swings.
  • Dry, weatherproof. Same sealed IP 65 / IP 67 case without fill, for outdoor lines with steady pressure.

Typical applications

  • Reciprocating and positive-displacement pumps
  • Air and gas compressors
  • Hydraulic power packs and presses
  • Fire-fighting pump houses
  • Outdoor pipelines, cooling towers and terraces
  • Wash-down areas in food and pharma plants

Consultant specification clause

Paste into your technical specification or BOQ and adjust ranges and quantities.

  1. Pressure gauges on pulsating or vibrating service shall be liquid filled (glycerine; silicone for cold locations).
  2. Construction: SS 316 Bourdon tube and socket, SS 304 movement, SS 304 case with blow-off disc, IP 65 (IP 67 where exposed).
  3. Dial 100 mm unless scheduled otherwise, aluminium, black on white, shatterproof glass, micrometer zero adjustment.
  4. Normal working pressure shall be between one third and two thirds of full scale on pulsating service.
  5. Accuracy ±1% FSD as per IS 3624, over-range 130% of full scale.
  6. Each gauge shall be supplied with an isolation valve and, on reciprocating pumps, a snubber.
  7. Make: Pioneer Industrial Instruments, Pune, or approved equivalent.

Questions buyers ask

Why fill a pressure gauge with glycerine?

To damp pointer flutter on pulsating or vibrating lines and to lubricate the movement. The reading becomes readable and the gauge lasts longer.

Glycerine or silicone: which fill should I choose?

Glycerine for normal ambient conditions. Silicone for cold climates or large temperature swings. Neither is used on oxygen service; tell us the medium and we confirm the build.

What does IP 65 or IP 67 mean on a gauge?

IP 65 is dust-tight and protected against water jets, enough for plant rooms and covered outdoor lines. IP 67 also survives temporary immersion, for exposed and wash-down locations.

Does liquid filling change the accuracy?

No. Accuracy stays ±1% FSD as per IS 3624; the fill only steadies the pointer.

Can an existing dry gauge be filled with glycerine later?

Only if the case is sealed and made for filling. Order a liquid filled gauge from the start; Pioneer's all-stainless case is built for it.
