IS 3624 and EN 837-1: pressure gauge standards

By the Pioneer engineering team, Pirangut, Pune. Updated 31 October 2026.

IS 3624 is the Indian standard for Bourdon tube pressure and vacuum gauges; EN 837-1 is the European equivalent, used on many export and multinational projects, with EN 837-2 giving selection and installation advice. Both define accuracy as a percentage of full scale. Pioneer's working gauges are ±1% FSD as per IS 3624 and test gauges ±0.25% FSD.

IS 3624

The Bureau of Indian Standards specification for Bourdon tube pressure and vacuum gauges. It is what most Indian consultants and PSU specifications call up, and it sets accuracy, dimensions and tests.

EN 837-1 and EN 837-2

EN 837-1 covers dimensions, accuracy classes (for example 1.0, 1.6, 0.25), requirements and testing of Bourdon tube gauges. EN 837-2 is guidance on selecting and installing them, including the advice to keep steady working pressure within three quarters of full scale. EN 837-3 covers diaphragm and capsule gauges.

Reading the accuracy figure

Both express accuracy as a percentage of the span. A 0–10 kg/cm² gauge at ±1% FSD may be off by 0.1 kg/cm² anywhere on the scale, which is why the reading is most meaningful in the middle of the dial.

What to write in your specification

  • India: "accuracy ±1% FSD as per IS 3624"; test gauges ±0.25% FSD.
  • Export or EN-based specs: state the EN 837-1 class required; Pioneer confirms it at quotation.
  • Temperature gauges: EN 13190 is the standard for dial thermometers; Pioneer bimetallic gauges are ±1% FSD as per EN 13190.

Quick answers

Is IS 3624 the same as EN 837-1?

They cover the same kind of instrument and both use percentage-of-span accuracy, but they are separate standards. State the one your project requires.

Which standard covers dial thermometers?

EN 13190 covers dial thermometers, including bimetallic types.
